The 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has announced his resignation from the party and his decision to join the Peoples Redemption Party.
Baba-Ahmed made the disclosure on Tuesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, citing internal disputes, a departure from the party’s founding principles, and alleged external interference as reasons for his exit.
The former running mate to Peter Obi in the 2023 general election alleged that certain developments within the party had made the environment increasingly difficult for him.
According to him, individuals were deliberately positioned to undermine his role, stressing that the Labour Party had strayed from the ideals it once represented.
He also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of focusing more on weakening opposition parties than addressing critical national challenges.
Baba-Ahmed said the government appeared more interested in destabilising political rivals than tackling insecurity, reviving the economy, and curbing corruption.
He confirmed that his resignation from the Labour Party would take effect at midnight, declaring the Peoples Redemption Party as his next political platform.
Describing the PRP as a party with a rich legacy, he expressed confidence in its structure and history, noting that it has existed for several decades.
Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Baba-Ahmed said he would support efforts within the PRP to produce what he described as a credible southern candidate.
While he remained non-committal on his own presidential ambition, he suggested he was satisfied with his political and professional accomplishments, which include serving in the House of Representatives and the Senate, as well as establishing major private institutions.
He, however, did not rule out future political aspirations.
