A former Governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing ongoing political recalibration ahead of a new alignment.
Shekarau, who also served as a minister and senator, announced his departure in a letter dated April 19, 2026, addressed to the PDP chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
He stated that his resignation takes immediate effect.
“Kindly accept this letter as formal notice of my resignation as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party with effect from today,” he wrote.
The ex-governor attributed his exit to extensive consultations within his political bloc, hinting at plans to join another platform.
According to him, the decision followed “wide-ranging deliberations” with his associates on the need to pursue their political ambitions under a different party.
Despite his departure, Shekarau expressed appreciation to party leaders at the ward level for their support, offering prayers for continued guidance in their leadership roles.
Copies of the resignation letter were also sent to the PDP leadership at both the local government and state levels, signalling a coordinated and formal disengagement from the party’s structure.
