The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has warned of an imminent flood disaster in Jahi and Gishiri Districts, Abuja, due to building on waterways. The acting director-general (DG) of FEMD, Florence Wenegieme, issued the warning in Abuja on Friday after the department conducted a risk assessment exercise in the areas. Ms Wenegieme said the assessment revealed that residents had built houses on waterways and floodplains while drainages were blocked in Jahi and Gishiri. A 32-year-old son of a police officer identified as Francis Danjuma, allegedly drowned in the Ogun River. According to Punch, Danjuma, who resided in the Isheri Olofin community, was said to have left his house around 2:00 p.m. on June 12, 2024, to bathe in the river.
